As our nation is beset with this war like enemy on our borders, it is imperative that we do not become our own worst enemies. In developing responses against the Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19), I wish to call our attention as leaders to certain concerns which can actually be worse for our people than this nemesis. Our actions going forward must be guided by love and not political sensitivities or photo opportunities. We must truly lead - human beings!
I am very much in support of containment measures that aim to slow or contain the spread of this virus. I am also conscious of the toll that any quarantine measures will have on our peoples economic, mental and even physical well being.
While it is imperative to follow global best practices we must also take cognisanse of the economic systems, the medical supports, the social welfare and logistics of such nations.
I will not minse words in saying that if Nigeria is quarantined for 7 days straight no less than 10,000 deaths will be confirmed as resulting from Sucide, Hypertension, Starvation and untreated Routine Ailments. While this may not register as victims of COVID-19, and may even be hidden from public view through intentional under-reporting or database inefficiencies, it will still be a tragedy.
As you plan you contingencies as a Chief Executive Officer, Government Official, Religious Leader or Influencer, I wish to call your attention to the need for a concerted, genuine and committed program to ensure access to water, food and medicines for all of our people, especially the bottom 20% of the population.
I must remind some of us that our best in Nigeria and maybe even you, were born in the most ugly of circumstances and we cannot for lack of current achievement ignore the possibility that we are helping in the genocide of the people who may very well be the hope of our nation.
If we are to win this war, we must fight with love, all gloves off, the best ideas winning, and Nigeria leading the world on how to respond to a Pandemic.
